As businesses move more applications and infrastructure components to the cloud, new skill sets are coming into vogue, and IT professionals need to keep pace – or else.
Changes in IT skills requirements are coming on a couple of fronts. Vendors have revamped their training classes so they are more cloud courses. Also, the types of certifications that businesses desire are evolving.
Some of the changes are incremental. For instance, a cloud architect is similar to a traditional systems architect. These employees focus on high-level design challenges and develop broad frameworks that companies rely on when building new applications. The systems architect defines technical aspects of the solution, including the approach, architecture, analyses, and desired technologies. While a systems architect formerly evaluated server hardware and network design, a cloud architect tackles issues like IaaS, SaaS, or PaaS, and public, hybrid or public.
To help in this area, Microsoft developed the Windows Azure Architect program, which enables IT professionals to implement efficient applications and services for the Windows Azure Platform.Individuals are trained in Azure Virtual Machines and virtual networks. In addition, they gain insight into platform as a service (PaaS) implementations, including how to use PowerShell for automation and management. IT professionals learn how to leverage Active Directory as they deploy cloud for private networks as well as when they migrate to hybrid and public cloud services. Licensing for cloud solutions is different from traditional premises based products, so IT staffers learn about those differences as well.
Also training classes and certification programs for building private clouds are fast emerging. To gain expert level status for building Microsoft Windows Server private clouds, for example, individuals complete two training and certification programs: Monitoring and Operating a Private Cloud with System Center 2012 and Configuring and Deploying a Private Cloud with System Center 2012.For designing public cloud infrastructures,Azure Solutions Architect is designed to provide techies with public cloud skills via classes in developing Microsoft Azure Solutions and Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions.
It’s clear that cloud certification in one form or another is emerging as the new normal. Time to put those COBOL skills to rest.
