At LG&E and KU Energy, patrollers in the Aerial Patrol Department spend 120 days a year in the air. Instead of needing to use trucks, ladders and cherry pickers, they travel by helicopter, looking for possible damage, overgrown vegetation or other problems that could cause a power outage along the 5,500 miles of transmission lines in the company\u2019s territories in Virginia and Kentucky.\nDuring the fly-over, issues with transmission lines must be documented, which require patrollers to take hand-written notes and mark the locations on a paper map -- not an easy task while flying in a helicopter. \u201cThe co-pilot was taking manual notes at high vibration, challenging visibility and high speed,\u201d says Joan Ferch, director of IT development and support at LG&E and KU Energy. She says it was difficult to get accurate notes inflight and inefficient to spend time transcribing back at the office.\nTo save time and hassle for patrollers, the IT department at LG&E and KU Energy developed an iPad application for use inflight. During the design process, the company\u2019s project manager, business analysts and developers went for fly-alongs to better understand what the pilot and co-pilot were experiencing in order to build an efficient user interface.\n[Related: : CIO 100 2014 Winner Profile ]\n \niPads in the Sky\nNow, while in the air, the co-pilot straps the iPad to his thigh and uses the application to record information over a cellular connection. The application shows a geospatial information system map (GIS) with an overlay of where transmission facilities are located. The patroller can track and annotate utility structures to make note of each one\u2019s location.\nTo identify problems such as woodpecker holes, deer stands or overgrown trees patrollers can choose from options listed along the side of the screen. After the co-pilot logs any transmission issues, operations employees on the ground view it in real-time and can start taking action. If the helicopter is flying through bad weather, the pilots can use voice mode to record comments hands-free. The data is then saved locally in case the connection is lost, says Jim Lepianka, manager, .Net and Mobile Applications Development at LG&E and KU Energy\n\u201cThe specificity and accuracy is way better than manual input,\u201d says Marcus Torchia, research manager at IDC. \u201cIt reduces mistakes and there\u2019s a great amount of efficiency gained by having representation on the iPad.\u201d\nThe application also displays information about past issues with equipment or problem areas that could put the helicopter in danger within a 1,600-foot geofenced area, Ferch says. \u201cIt\u2019s even telling him what had been the worst issues with that equipment in the last 24 months so he could look to see if things had improved or if he needs to write more work orders,\u201d Ferch says.\nAfter making their rounds, patrollers upload the information to the database with one click. Lepianka says syncing the data automatically generates the necessary work orders. Recording information from the flights is now a more accurate and streamlined process, says Ferch. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be transcribed from notes that you can\u2019t read when you get back down to the ground.\u201d The company expects the one-click upload to reduce data input time by 95 percent each year. The application will also help reduce flight time by 10 percent each year because patrollers can view utility structure numbers on the screen instead of having to count them during the trip.\nTorchia says using the iPad application also results in the trickle-down benefits of quicker identification of problems, lower maintenance costs and less manpower. Overall, he says, \u201cIf you can reduce flight time, you\u2019re reducing the charges that the utility has to pay to do inspections in the first place.\u201d\nLepianka says the company is conducting a patent review on the application and several other utilities, including LG&E and KU\u2019s parent company, have expressed interest in using it.
