Text Messaging Spam Could Bring Down Cell Phone Networks

Cell phone networks in large cities could be brought down by hackers bombarding the text message function with spam, according to two computer science researchers at Pennsylvania State University. The New York Times reports that, in a paper that will be released today, the scientists argue that all major cellular networks are vulnerable, and that a single computer with a cable modem could do the job.  The researchers said that once they began exploring the vulnerabilities of the network, they proved their concepts on a small scale by using their own cellphones.  Read more.
