Internet-behemoth Yahoo today will open its first research labs in Spain and Chile in an attempt to bolster online search services, an Associated Press article on Boston.com reports.

The labs are scheduled to open today, and will be operated by information retrieval expert Ricardo Baeza-Yates, who co-authored the textbook Modern Information Retrieval.  He will be based in Barcelona.

Yahoo has been reaching deep into its coffers recently to catch up with Google in the Internet search-engine market.  It already operates research centers in San Francisco and offices in New York and Southern California.
