On Thursday, World Cyber Games said Microsoft has been selected to be the video game tournament’s premier sponsor through 2008, Reuters reports.

As the booming $25 billion worldwide video game industry becomes increasingly assimilated into the mainstream, more and more video and computer game competitions are popping up, and Microsoft wants a piece of the action.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant is to provide hardware, games and marketing materials for every World Cyber Games event through 2008 via its Xbox 360 and Games for Windows business units, according to Reuters.

International Cyber Marketing, a Korean firm backed by Samsung Electronics, operates World Cyber Games, Reuters reports.
