HP has announced a workstation that offers a choice of Intel’s recently released Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors.

The xw4400 is based around the Intel 975X Express chipset. It supports Core 2 Duo chips up to 2.66GHz and the 2.93GHz Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor. All of these are dual-core, and feature 4MB of Level 2 cache.

Up to 8GB of RAM can be installed in the xw4400. The workstation supports PCI Express graphics cards, and offers storage options including Serial Attached SCSI hard drives.

The workstation comes preloaded with either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP. Red Hat Enterprise Linux will be offered as an option in the fall, and HP says the xw4400 is officially rated as Windows Vista Capable.

Pricing begins at 719 pounds (US$1,339) plus VAT.
