Sun Microsystems has teamed up with data-storage vendor Imation to develop a new Sun StorageTek tape drive with improved capacity and security features.

The Sun StorageTek T9840D will increase the native capacity of tape cartridges to 75GB, while maintaining access speeds and reliability levels, said Sun in a statement Wednesday. The new drive also adds device-level encryption for servo-written cartridges.

The T9840D, expected to ship in 2007, is backward compatible with Sun’s existing 9840 media. Pricing is not yet available.

The joint development effort expands on a long partnership between Imation and Sun, which deepened last year through Sun’s US$4.1 billion acquisition of StorageTek, one of Imation’s major original equipment manufacturer partners.
