South Korea’s LG Electronics produced more plasma display panels (PDPs) in the first quarter of the year than did any of its competitors, according to estimates released Thursday by iSuppli.LG was ranked the top PDP maker in the three-month period with a 31 percent market share. That’s several percentage points above second-ranked Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), which had a 26 percent share and was the top-ranked PDP maker in the fourth quarter of 2005. In third place was Samsung SDI with a 23.5 percent share, followed by Japan’s Pioneer at 11.2 percent and Hitachi at 8.3 percent, said iSuppli. The strong showing by LG was attributed to an increase in production at the South Korean manufacturer.Combined with production at Samsung SDI, the Korean PDP industry accounted for 54.5 percent of panel production during the first quarter, up from 40.5 percent in the first quarter of 2005, iSuppli said. -Martyn Williams, IDG News Service (Tokyo Bureau)Check out our CIO News Alerts and Tech Informer pages for more updated news coverage.
