Adobe has released Flash Player 9 for Mac and Windows systems.

The company claims the new free Flash Player is more secure and more capable of running rich media applications. It uses ActionScript 3.0, which makes it 10 times faster performing than before, the company said.

It also features an ActionScript Virtual Machine, with a Just In Time compiler that translates ActionScript bytecode to native machine code for maximum execution speed.

Adobe claims Flash Player is installed on more than 600 million Internet-connected PCs and mobile devices worldwide.

“Flash Player 9 enables developers to deliver next-generation Web applications with its dramatically increased performance and leading-edge scripting,” said Kevin Lynch, senior vice president and chief software architect at Adobe Systems.

In separate news, Adobe has announced the availability of the Adobe Flex 2 product line, its enterprise tool for building Web applications.
