Samsung SDI is investing about 80 billion won (US$85 million) to construct a plasma display panel factory in Hungary, it said Tuesday.

The company, which is a specialized display manufacturer affiliated with Samsung Electronics, has already begun construction of the factory on a site in Budapest. It is scheduled to be completed by April 2007 and will produce 42-inch panels, a spokesman for Samsung SDI in Seoul said.

Separately, Toshiba said it is in talks with the Polish government on the construction of a liquid crystal display (LCD) assembly plant in that country. The details of the project have yet to be decided, a spokeswoman for the Tokyo company said.

Over the weekend, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business newspaper reported that Toshiba is planning to spend about 5 billion yen (US$43 million) on the plant, which will make LCD TVs for the European market.
