A checklist to run before you begin the implementation process.

Before you begin your IT Infrastructure Library implementation, make sure to do the following:

  1. Have a clear vision for what you wish to accomplish and where you want to go.
  2. Get executive sponsorship.
  3. Communicate with and get buy-in from the business and your IT staff.
  4. Determine your biggest opportunity for value, or where you can immediately benefit the business, and start there.
  5. Understand where you are—look at your current key performance indicators and see how you’re trending.
  6. Establish simple metrics to calculate and communicate improvements in services.
  7. Switch to business-oriented communication and language for service management and delivery.
  8. Think long-term and make sure your processes are integrated—for example, incident tickets feed problem management, which allows for root cause analysis across the enterprise.
  9. Don’t lose sight of your vision (step 1) and constantly check your progress against it.
