CIO.com's mobile maestro Al Sacco handpicks seven great-looking and functional BlackBerry PlayBook cases to help protect your shiny new tablet, add comfort and features--and give you some extra style points in the process.

Tablet PCs are valuable for a number of reasons: they’re powerful; they’re pretty; and they’re portable.

But tablets aren’t particularly durable.

That’s why it’s important to find the right protective case for you and your new tablet, a case that protects your device and looks good, but isn’t too restrictiveor expensive. The following seven cases are all worth their asking prices, and each offers unique features that set it apart from similar BlackBerry PlayBook Cases.

(Note: I’ve included links to the case-manufacturers’ Websites on each of the following slides, but better prices for most of them can be found on Websites like Amazon.com and the CrackBerry.com Shop.)

Vaja Leather Book for BlackBerry PlayBook

The Vaja Leather Book for BlackBerry PlayBook is the most expensive case mentioned in this post, and the steep price can mostly be attributed to the high-quality, specialty leather used, which is luxurious and durable. The case opens like a book, with a padded interior section that holds your PlayBook in place. A thick elastic band keeps it closed when not in use, and the Leather Book gives you quick and easy access to all of your PlayBook’s ports when opened.

BlackBerry PlayBook Convertible Case from RIM

Like the previously mentioned Vaya case, Research In Motion (RIM)’s PlayBook Convertible case looks much like a leather notebook when closed. It features a hard-plastic shell inside the leather exterior to protect your device from drops and dings. And it can also be flipped open into a makeshift stand for your tablet, with two different viewing angles. You also have access to ports when the case is open, and at $49.99, it won’t break the bank.

BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber for BlackBerry PlayBook

The BodyGuardz Armor Carbon Fiber for PlayBook is the lightest, least intrusive “case” featured in this post, but it’s also protective and fashionable. The Armor Carbon Fiber is really just a tight fitting skin that protects the outer casing of your PlayBook—it doesn’t cover your PlayBook display, but BodyGuardz makes up for that with a free screen-protector film. The skin is fairly simple to apply and later remove, and looks great.

DODOcase Classic for BlackBerry PlayBook

Another book-like PlayBook case, the DODOcase Classic, is a less-pricey yet still stylish alternative to the previously mentioned Vaya case. It’s made with a combination of Moroccan cloth, bamboo and elastic. And it’s available in a variety of colors, including red, blue, green and charcoal. You can’t use the PlayBook’s camera while it’s in the DODOcase, but it is designed so you can easily remove and replace your PlayBook for quick camera access. And, you do have access to all of your tablet’s ports when the case is open.

DODOcase Classic for BlackBerry PlayBook is available for $59.95 from the manufacturer

OtterBox Defender Series for BlackBerry PlayBook

OtterBox’s Defender Series case for the PlayBook is the most protective—and therefore, the most bulky—of the cases spotlighted here. It offers three layers of protection: 1) a silicon skin that fits directly onto your tablet and acts as a shock absorber; 2) a polycarbonate hard shell that goes over the silicon to hold it in place and protect it from drops and hard dings; and 3) a protective screen-protector skin that covers your PlayBook’s display. The case isn’t exactly svelte, but it can take a beating and it provides access at all times to your PlayBook’s ports and camera.

The Defender Series for BlackBerry PlayBook can be purchased for $69.95 on OtterBox.com

BlackBerry PlayBook Leather Envelope from RIM

It may not be the most protective tablet case in the world, but the BlackBerry PlayBook Leather Envelope from RIM sure is unique. It looks just like, well…a large leather envelope. And it protects your tablet from minor drops, dings and other damage thanks to a relatively thick, handcrafted leather exterior and padded, custom-patterned inner surface. A magnet on the inside of the envelope flap keeps it closed when not in use. And it’s available in both black and purple.

Incipio SILICRYLIC for BlackBerry PlayBook

08_incipio-100344582-orig.jpg

Incipio’s SILICRYLIC case for the PlayBook is similar to OtterBox’s defender in that it offers three layers of protection: a hard outer “shell;” a rubbery silicon inner “sleeve;” and a screen protector. But the SILICRYLIC case isn’t quite as bulky, and it’s available in three color options (black and gray, white and gray, and pink and gray) for the style-conscious “tablet toter.” The case also packs a built-in stand, for more comfortable Web surfing, video viewing, etc.

The SILICRYLIC for BlackBerry PlayBook case can be purchased for $39.99 on MyIncipio.com
