CIO.com's Al Sacco offers a video demonstration of the Motorola Atrix 4G's new Webtop application. Motorola last week released its latest and greatest Android smartphone, the Atrix 4G on AT&T in the United States. Along with a blazingly-fast, dual-core processor, Android v2.2.1 and a cool, new fingerprint-scanner for authentication, the Atrix 4G also packs a unique Motorola application called Webtop, which turns the handheld into a PC-like mobile computing environment when used along with an HDMI-compatible display, keyboard and mouse. After connecting to Motorola’s Atrix-specific “Lapdock” laptop-like docking station or an HDMI monitor, users can launch Webtop for access to a variety of desktop tools, including a full version of the Firefox browser, a file manager, an HD Entertainment Center and more. Webtop is currently only available on the Motorola Atrix 4G, but the company says the app will be shipped along with all high-end Motorola smartphones starting this summer, which implies additional docks, or perhaps a universal dock for all Webtop-compatible-devices, will be released in the future. Motorola was nice enough to send along its HD Multimedia Dock, as well as a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for use with my Atrix smartphone, so I thought I’d post up a quick video to show the Webtop application and demonstrate some of its various capabilities. As is, the Webtop app is cool, and it could surely come in handy for folks who want or need only to connect to the Web for e-mail or social networking, etc. Personally, I need additional applications, such as Photoshop, media apps, etc., to do my job, so I still really feel like I need a full PC. It will be interesting, however, to see what kinds of applications and services Motorola has in mind for the future Webtop users, to increase value to “power-users” like myself.
