David Selinger is in a business where mining data is crucial to delivering a personalized shopping experience. Yet, the CEO and co-founder of RichRelevance says that one of the most important lessons he’s learned as an entrepreneur is to listen to his inner voice even if facts and logic suggest a different direction.

Before co-founding the San Francisco company in 2006, David Selinger led the R&D effort of Amazon’s data mining and personalization team, where he learned how impactful data can be to improve the retail shopping experience. Now more than 160 international companies use RichRelevance to turn data into actionable insight in the effort to deliver the most relevant experience for consumers as they shop across web, store and mobile. It’s an opportunity, he says, to help create the definition of shopping in the 21st century.

A self-taught coder at an early age, Selinger says that experience provided him with the foundation of entrepreneurship: the ability to believe in self, the ability to get up after failure, and to brush oneself off and keep going.
