Is Facebook Expanding Threaded Comments?

Threaded comments could be one of Facebook's announcements at its press event tomorrow.

I’ve wanted to see threaded comments on Facebook for a while now. I subscribe to a handful of heavily trafficked Pages—for example The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal—and their comments sections can be the most interesting part of my News Feed. Actually following the conversation, especially when there are hundreds of comments, can be difficult though. And that’s when it loses value.

Last night when I was browsing Facebook, I noticed that the Facebook + Journalists page was displaying comments on a new post differently. Within the list of comments is a link that says “Facebook + Journalists replied – 2 Replies.” Click on the link and the comments are expanded in a threaded format.

This isn’t the first time threaded comments have popped up on Facebook. In November, the social network tested it on a Thai page. Facebook confirmed it to Inside Facebook, saying that the test was limited to Pages and threaded comments were not appearing on users’ personal posts.

On Thursday, Facebook is holding an event to unveil “a new look for News Feed,” so it’s possible that Facebook will extend the threaded comments feature more broadly to users’ profiles and the News Feeds.
