On Tuesday, 1 October, British multinational bank Standard Chartered announced the appointment of Rene W Keller as Chief Information Officer (CIO), Corporate, Commercial & Institutional Banking (CCIB), from 1 January 2020.

Based in Singapore and reporting to Michael Gorriz, Group CIO, Keller will be responsible for the entire technology strategy, architecture and delivery value chain that will deliver outcomes for the CCIB business.

A seasoned leader in technology with a strong focus on delivery, Keller enjoyed a three-year stint as Group Data Officer and Group Head of Innovation at Deutsche Bank, and before that, its Global CIO for Private, Wealth & Commercial Clients.

His CV also includes spells as Group CIO of Deutsche Börse (Germany’s international exchange), Chief Operating Officer at Information Mosaic (a fintech focused on corporate actions and post trade securities processing), and Head of IT for Swiss Life, Switzerland's largest life insurance company.

Keller is replacing Bhupendra Warathe, who will be taking on a newly created role of Chief Technology Officer, Cloud Transformation.

With cloud being one of the key pillars of Standard Chartered's technology strategy to enable its businesses to be more scalable and efficient, Warathe’s background in the Technology & Innovation (T&I) function and strong relationships across the organisation positions him in this role to harness the power of cloud and drive adoption in the bank.

Since joining Standard Chartered in 2006, Warathe has held various leadership roles including Global Head of Countries and Operations, Information Technology and Operations, as well as Global Head of Product Engineering for Banking Products and Global Head of Technology and Operations for Cash and Trade.

Prior to Standard Chartered, Warathe spent over eight years at Deutsche Bank, where he held the post of Global Head of Trade Finance, GTO.

He will continue to report to Michael Gorriz, and continue to oversee CCIB T&I until January 2020 to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
