New York appoints British CIO

Maggie Miller, formerly CIO of retailer J Sainsbury's, has been appointed CIO for New York State in the US. Miller has been CIO of Girls Scouts of the USA in her adopted home since December 2012.

New York State's technology services department oversees government websites and applications, has nearly 40,000 computers and an email system shared by more than 75,000 users. The department has a budget of more than $900 million.

Miller has worked in information technology at Warner Music Group, Dell and various British companies.

New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Miller's mix of public and private sector experience makes her "uniquely qualified".

"Thirty-five years in IT, 20 years as a CIO, 19 years of experience in outsourcing as well as transformation programmes, offshore and onshore," is how Miller described her career to CIO UK on a visit to London in 2011.

Miller was CIO of Warner Music Group from 2005 to 2010 following a technology leadership career at Sainsbury's.

Earlier this year Rachel S Haot, the State of New York Chief Digital Officer and Deputy Secretary for Technology - and the former CDO for the City of New York under Mayor Bloomberg - was named the 2014 Chief Digital Officer of the Year by the CDO Club at their summit in the city.
