Fife unitary authority was created in 1966 from the district councils of Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and North East Fife; Dunfermline, Kirkclady and Glenrothes form the largest communities in the region. Fife is Scotland's second-largest local authority by population and includes the famous University and golf town of St Andrews.
