Formed in 1976 Buro Happold is an engineering consultancy providing design, planning, project management and consulting for building and environmental projects. The company is based in Bath as result of its founder Sir Edmund Happold moving to the city to take a professorship at the University of Bath. Today the company has offices in seven countries, but it still headquartered in Bath. Its engineers are involved in a wide range of architectural and construction projects from hospitals and living spaces to commercial developments. IT Leader:Shaun Mundy, Group Director of IT In role since: Three years five months Reporting line:Reports to the CFO Board level seat:No but he is part of the organisation’s Wider Leadership Team which consists of the Managing Directors of the Business Units and Business Services Leadership IT budget:Approximately £5.5m after making £3.5m savings in three years IT estate and or number of log on accounts under the control of the IT leader: Accounts are around 1500 – with laptops, desktops and corporate smartphones. All staff rely on centralised Business Systems, the engineering toolset (including central collaboration and model sharing systems), large reliance on desktop PC communications for chat, audio and video to all desktops globally across the global WAN. Level of the workforce that relies on technology to carry out their tasks: Financial and Project Business Intelligence reporting drives decision making, and the IT platforms are relied upon for all client deliveries on a global basis. Often, projects are delivered across multiple distributed offices, through collaboration across time zones and systems. IT staff currently employed:40 Split between in-house/outsourced staff:All staff are in-house although we have outsourced some services such as third party and Legacy Application Support. IT management team and reporting structure:Head of Operations covers the Global helpdesk and infrastructure, and leads on Account Management with the Business Units; Engineering Services Manager covers the Global Support of Engineering toolsets and working practises; Business Systems Manager covers the systems for Finance, HR and Business Development. Primary technology platforms at the organisation: Agresso Financials, Sage CRM, Ciphr HR system, with Microsoft Sharepoint for Knowledge and Exchange for email. Microsoft OCS for communications – about to upgrade to Lync as part of the convergence strategy (already converged with Polycom HDVC)Primary main technology suppliers: Microsoft, Polycom, Lenovo, Sage, Agresso Significant strategic technology deals been struck in the last 12 months: Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, Lenovo desktop, AutoDesk Licensing, NetApp Storage Strategic aim of the CIO and IT operations for the next financial year: BIM, Consumerisation, Process and ERP.BIM – defining with the business the programme for BIM Levels 1 & 2 (industry targets set by the UK Government) and delivery of the change programme.Consumerisation study underway in partnership with HR to plan how Buro Happold can positively deliver to and enable  staff – over and above the standard delivery of IT.Process – delivery of a process framework to improve governance and process standardisation for the global practise to lead to a proposed Global ERP deployment.Knowledge – definition and delivery of a knowledge programme.Technologies considered by the leader to offer their organisation potential:Virtualisation is already heavily deployed in the datacentre and office environments.Convergence programme is in operation (HD VC for meeting rooms and voice/video to the desktop)Cloud is already utilised for one content management system and will be further considered for further systems – both to enable rapid build and business focus.SharePoint 2010 is being considered for the upgrade of our knowledge platform. Future transformation and technology vision for the organisation: Currently investigating the movement of BIM platform integration between companies, rather than just between Buro Happold offices.
