The Met is not only a big police force for the nation’s biggest city, it is arguably the most important police force in the UK due to the extra responsibilities it carries out on behalf of national policing. Counter-terrorism policing in the UK is the responsibility of the Met, as is the daily protection of the Royal Family and senior members of the government. What impact will it/does it have on the organisation?Huge.  Police Officers will be able spend more time figthing crime and helping victims instead of keying and rekeying data into legacy systems back at the Police Station.  They will have location-centric information at their fingertips when out on the best.  Detectives will have fast search and and analysis tools to track and find suspects.  Public confidence in the Police will be significantly improved. What new strategic technology deals has your organisation struck and with whom?We are in the process of placing contracts with a number of major agile development providers to help us deliver this transformation, as well as renegotiating the prime outsorucing contract with the incumbent provider.  We are also looking to buy a large number (20,000+) of mobile devices.  Additionally we are engaging with software solutions providers for advanced analytical search capabilities. What is the strategic aim of the CIO and IT operations for the next financial year?To deliver intuitive, agile technology solutions to mobilise our Officers, transform the fight against crime, enhance victim support and maintain a professional, truly digital policing service for London. Transformation achievements Would you describe the CIO role as a transformation leader in your organisation?Absolutely.  The use of technology is essential in moderm policing, and the CIO needs to enable that. Describe the transformations you have led / been involved in, how did they transform operations, customer experience or the organisation?Before working at the Met Police I have been a CIO at UBS Global Asset Management and Ford in Europe.  In the UBS role I was able to transform the IT delivery from being regional, high cost and poor quality into a professional global service that delivered vastly improved global technology solutions for the Asset Management business at around 30% lower cost.  Whilst at Ford I championed the technology and business transformation of the order-to-delivery process with a £60m programme that enabled an 80% reduction in order-to-delivery lead-time and provided the ability for customers to modify orders just prior to production. Beyond technology, can you describe a business transformation programme that you own or contribute to?I am on the Board of the Met Change programme which is transforming the operating model for Policing in London through business practice and organisational change. What key technologies are being considered to enable transformation?Cloud solutions, apps implemnted on mobile devices, big-data search analytical tools, open-source database technologies. What percentage of your applications / infrastructure is run from the Cloud?5% How is the use by employees of their own technology, use of mobiles and social networking impacting operations, customer experiences or the organisation at present?Has a big impact as employees and the public expect the Police Force to be kitted with the latest technology to help fight crime.  Employees use tools such as personal mobile devices to help them perform their duities (google maps, search, etc), and also employ social media to connect with the public. Do you have a plan in place for how to deal with shadow IT and BYOD. How do you influence and engage executives, place the right controls around employee choice and engage with the organisation on this issue?Due to security requirements, at present the ability to use BYOD is extremely limited, although we do have some offerings.  By engaging with the business at senior levels and through regular organisation-wide communications we are engaging at all levels on these issues.  In terms of shadow IT we are aiming to provide a cost-effective responsive service, which will reduce the desire for shadow IT. Where do you seek transformational inspiration from?From speaking to the business at all levels, I learn about their challengesand how they could do their job more effectively and that inspires me to provide transofrmational solutions.
