Order the following sources of advice/information by value to you: In-house Peer Group Consultant Analyst Vendors Technology strategy and spending What is the major transformational IT project that has been recently completed, or is underway at your organisation?The organisation has traditionally been autonomous from an IT perspective, with each region (UK, CIS, MENA, Asia, Australia) empowered to make its own IT decisions. This has resulted in distributed systems from network to ERP applications. The CIO appointment follows a change at CEO and CFO level and is the first time the organisation has had a centralised approach to IT. The task is simplify and standardise systems across the group. The project has three main strands, selection and implementation of a global MPLS solution, consolidation of Microsoft domains and migration to Office 365 with a global Exchange, Lync and SharePoint environment and finally selection an implementation of a standard ERP system across the group. The first two strands are in progress with the ERP selection project expexted to start Q2 2014. What impact will it/does it have on the organisation?The impact on the organisation will be significant enabling the company to operate as 'one organisation' rather than several different entities as they do currently. Having a global address book and Global Lync environment will significantly improve collaboration across the organisation. Operational Excellence is a key pillar in the business strategy and the standarisation of systems will play a significant part in enabling OE.From a technical persepctive the opportunity to improve Disaster recovery, reduce costs through removing duplicated hardware and software is also significant. Transformation achievements Would you describe the CIO role as a transformation leader in your organisation?Yes. This has only changed recently however, the value IT adds to the organisation is becoming more recognised almost on a daily basis. Describe the transformations you have led / been involved in, how did they transform operations, customer experience or the organisation?We have a small internal .Net development team in the UK. They have been developing .Net systems to control the workflow at site level. Recently we implemented intrinsically safe handheld deivices to perform inspections at the job face at a major UK Petrochemical plant. We were the first contractor to implement this technology on site which showed us to be an innovative partner. Another major client from the power sector in the UK is so impressed by the quality of the information we produce from the .Net systems that they are requesting all contractors on site produce the same information. Beyond technology, can you describe a business transformation programme that you own or contribute to?I contribute to the Operational excellence transformation, although this does have a significant technological aspect.What key technologies are being considered to enable transformation?We will be looking to expand on the success of the Intrinsically safe device for inspections and look to perform more tasks at the job face using a variety of intrinsically safe, rugged mobile devices. The device required is very much driven by the environment. How is the use by employees of their own technology, use of mobiles and social networking impacting operations, customer experiences or the organisation at present?Fairy minimal at present, we only allow employees to use their own devices to access e-mail. Do you have a plan in place for how to deal with shadow IT and BYOD. How do you influence and engage executives, place the right controls around employee choice and engage with the organisation on this issue?No not at present, we will review once the consolidation project is complete.
