Jacky Wright, HMRC's fresh Chief Digital and Information Officer, found herself in the IT hot seat last year, with the Brexit vote triggering an avalanche of development activity to deal with the prospective customs repercussions of the UK leaving the EU's tariff-free single market. With around 600 million customs declarations a year required by importers post-Brexit, Wright and her team are building a cloud-based risk evaluation platform to run rules-based pre-transaction checks on data from a wide range of sources to ensure each declaration meets the UK's business, security and operational needs. The system provides fast and accurate predictions of the risks associated with specific consignments of goods into the UK before they arrive at the UK border. The national insurance and PAYE system has been transitioned from a physical to a virtual estate, and consolidated onto a single Oracle database. The database tier migration dealt with an extraordinarily vast quantity of data – 7.5 terabytes, encompassing 65 billion rows on the largest table, and 7,400 tables in all, containing 99 million accounts. And if that weren't enough for a behemoth organisation, Wright is also moving the tax platform and over 130 digital services to AWS. The move has delivered large cost savings on hosting and increased availability.
