Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Karl Hoods

RANK: #21

COMPANY WHERE WON: Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

AWARD DETAILS:

For Karl Hoods, Chief Digital & Information Officer at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the human dimension is more important than the technical. In an organisation that trades in ideas, discussion, thought and analysis, the IS department is all about enabling and amplifying staff collaboration, engagement and effectiveness.

Under Hoods, the organisation’s approach to knowledge management has shifted away from traditional records-based processes to one centred on teams and individuals. No surprise then that chat tool Slack has been deployed to 300 BEIS analytics staff so they can collaborate with other departments that use it, resolving issues more quickly as a result.

He has also rolled out collaboration platform Teams to cut down on email overload and physical meetings. While it has proved particularly valuable for such initiatives as Brexit coordination and business planning in 2019, its day-to-day functionality is likely to be seen as heaven-sent during the pandemic lockdown, given its ability to act as a remote-working enabler. A legislation outcome tracker is also in the works.

He is also in charge of a shared services programme between the Insolvency Service, the UK Space Agency and the Department for International Trade. The programme is currently identifying and quantifying transformation opportunities.
