The shipping company teamed with Hewlett Packard for a wireless, paperless solution to increase the efficiency of package processing. Now, instead of bringing packages to a fixed large thermal printer, PC, monitor and scanner to print labels with sorting instructions, the employee wirelessly scans the package with an HP Handheld sp400 All-in-One imprinter and then prints sorting instructions directly onto the package. Once the handheld device is fully deployed, UPS expects to eliminate 1,338 tons of paper and decrease operational costs by more than $30 million over the next five years.
