2010 Winner Profile

NASA Ames Research Center

Project Description:
NASA Ames Research Center has created an open-source cloud computing environment to provide high-capacity computing, network connectivity, storage and other services to NASA scientists. Dubbed Nebula, the cloud service uses modular containerized data centers to cut energy consumption by 50 percent while supporting up to 30,000 CPU cores, or 30 petabytes, of data storage per container. Nebula allows NASA engineers and scientists to use advanced high-performance infrastructure that complies with government security regulations at lower cost than they could produce for themselves. The efficiencies are not lost on the Obama Administration either: The White House currently uses Nebula as the infrastructure for websites designed to support government transparency.
