2012 Winner Profile

Christiana Care Health System

Project Description:
By replacing a decentralized, legacy, paper-based process, Christiana Care Health Systems emergency department communication management and workflow system has transformed call routing and tracking for the physicians required in an emergency. First, CCHS added touch-screen monitors inside and outside trauma rooms. The screens display details of trauma cases and an interactive diagram of the personnel involved so medical professionals can better assess the situation, log in to join the trauma team, and find out which colleagues are helping with a particular emergency. A second module lets field medics enter trauma information into an application, assign a trauma room for the patient, and activate the touch-screen monitors outside the room. Trauma responders are able to view these clinical details before entering the emergency room and log in to the system to take over a task. Together, the communication management and workflow modules allow for fast decision making and for emergency personnel to gain insight into a trauma before the patient arrives, allowing them to respond more quickly and accurately.
