2012 Winner Profile

Iowa Workforce Development

Project Description:
Unemployment in Iowa stands at 5.7 percent for the general population, and almost 25 percent among soldiers returning from active duty. Iowa Workforce Development, a state agency, every year provides support and services to 250,000 employers, workers and unemployed Iowans at 55 field offices. When federal funding cuts forced the closure of 36 of those offices, the agency turned to a technological solution: Creating public-facing virtual desktops and deploying them at libraries, homeless shelters, YMCAs and other locations in the states communities, where Iowans could use them without going to a physical office. To date, the agency has placed more than 1,500 virtual desktops in all 99 of the state's counties. Iowans use them to access resume assistance, skill-assessment tests, employment opportunities, and more.
