2013 Winner Profile

Amgen, Inc.

Project Description:
Enormous amounts of data are collected during the manufacture of therapeutic products. Realizing the potential to use this data to improve manufacturing, Amgen launched the Real-Time Multivariate Statistical Process Monitoring project with the goal of increasing delivery of products to patient without increasing manufacturing costs-Amgen's way of taming big data. Previously, Amgen used offline data analysis, which was reactive and in some cases caused significant delays in resolving process issues. The new automated analytics system saves time and allows the team to focus on the trends instead of gathering and charting data. In one case, a yield issue was rectified in less than a day thanks to the new system; with Amgen's old setup, it would not have become apparent for weeks. The new analytics process has significantly impacted patients and business operations, ensuring the quality and availability of medicines on which patients depend.
