2013 Winner Profile

Christiana Care Health System

Project Description:
Christiana Care Health System implemented Insight, an interactive iPad-based application that oncology and heart-failure patients use for pain symptom self-assessment. The application gives physicians a more accurate assessment of pain than a person-to-person interview could, thereby enabling a better pain-management care plan. Research shows that patients sometimes don't reveal symptoms such as pain or depression to an interviewer. But when responding to questions via an iPad-based application, these same patients overcome the anxiety that may cause them to give inaccurate, vague information. Patient satisfaction is dramatically higher as a result. According to Christiana Care, 85 percent of patients indicate that completing the self-assessment is easy, 78 percent said they like completing the survey electronically, and 70 percent said that preparing the assessment better prepared them to speak with the doctor.
