Covanta Energy's IT team transformed the way its sales and marketing teams conduct business, leveraging multiple technologies to deliver new capabilities while accounting for a 70 percent sales force growth in one year. Prior to the initiative, the teams had inefficient IT tools that required significant manual efforts to organize and retrieve information. So IT led an examination of how customer proposals and contracts were created and maintained. IT then developed new applications to improve those processes. A contracts and proposals system, driven by next-generation business process management tools, automated the process. A customer system automates service scheduling and enables partnerships with third-party service providers. An electronic billing portal provides customers with 24/7 access to their accounts and reduces paper usage. And a new Web presence enhances customer interaction with the company. The improvements generated by this initiative support the company's target of organic growth initiatives.
