Progressive is the leader in usage-based insurance, which takes into account the relative safety of an individual driver and how much he or she drives. Progressive's Snapshot product lets users plug a small device into the on-board diagnostic outlet in their cars for a 30-day trial. Using Progressive's patented data-collection software, the device records the amount driven and number of hard brakes to determine whether the user is entitled to a discount of up to 30 percent. Drivers who are not Progressive customers can use the device for 30 days to learn whether they'd be eligible for a discount. The 30-day trial is a competitive tool Progressive-certified agents can use with customers of other insurers. And identifying safer drivers gives the company higher-value policies overall.
