2015 Winner Profile

E. & J. Gallo Winery

Project Description:
Gallo embarked on a multi-faceted project using geospatial data in order to analyze grape supply trends and optimize yields from its vineyards. For example, analysis of satellite imagery shows water demands in each vineyard block and helps to optimize irrigation scheduling. Amidst the largest drought in California's history, Gallo mapped its vineyards, with information on soil types and yields, to more accurately estimate specific vine water needs. Using this information, Gallo developed an automated irrigation system that precisely delivers the right amount of water to each vine based on canopy size and yield. This technology significantly improved water usage efficiency, fruit yield and wine quality vs. traditional drip irrigation systems. Gallo also equipped its agriculture teams with mobile access to this data using wireless hotspots in the vineyards. Gallo says leading-edge technology -- including satellites, computer vision and massive data sets -- can help to solve age-old agricultural issues and change the industry's irrigation practices.
