2015 Winner Profile

Heartland Express Inc.

Project Description:
Trucking company Heartland Express's real-time fuel purchase optimization system automatically communicates fuel-purchase instructions to roughly 4,000 truck drivers across America. The system uses proprietary algorithms, along with in-truck technology, to pull in real-time fuel futures data and help determine the most cost-effective times and places to purchase fuel. Last year, the system significantly reduced fuel costs (the second-largest expense item on the company's income statement). And it improved driver satisfaction by using a combination of technologies to remove pain points from the buying process and inform its employees of the optimal times and places to refill their trucks.
