The Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network (CAAREN) is an initiative developed by the George Washington University Division of IT to build a high-performance research and education infrastructure serving the Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia areas. The network facilitates world-class research, education and knowledge sharing with research network services available to government, education, research and private-sector organizations. Through a partnership with DC-Net, D.C.'s citywide communications provider, CAAREN provides high-bandwidth Internet access to public and private research and education. For example, the collaboration provides the opportunity for telemedicine, distance learning, "digital field trips" and other life-changing applications in the region.
