2015 Winner Profile

The Kroger Co.

Project Description:
The giant supermarket chain introduced an electronic temperature-monitoring project, FAST (Food at Safe Temperature) Alerts, which changes the way it keeps cold and frozen food safe and fresh for its customers. The system also eliminates paper temperature logs in refrigeration cases, tracks real-time temperatures and makes the workload easier on employees. The FAST Alerts application directly notifies store managers of any food safety issues in the store's refrigerated and frozen-food areas. Wireless temperature sensors take temperatures every 30 minutes and send the readings to a computer for processing. The FAST Alerts application eliminates the need for manual temperature checks, which frees up hours of employees' time.
