2015 Winner Profile

The University of Chicago Medicine

Project Description:
In 2013, the University of Chicago Medicine opened its newest hospital, the Center for Care and Discovery, which included an operating-room system that lets surgeons control, route, capture and manage high-definition surgical images and videos. The imaging system is integrated with the center's electronic medical records so surgeons have quick access to patient records, even from the operating rooms. By recording surgical cases, the UChicago Medicine research teams are able to perform motion studies and develop new surgical methods. The system also enables audits that support the center's quality and patient-safety goals. Plus, the university can stream live surgical videos across the medical center's campus for academic and training purposes.
