2015 Winner Profile

U.S. Air Force, District of Washington, 844th Communications Group

Project Description:
Under the U.S. Air Force District Washington command, the 844th Communications Group provides IT and communications for Camp David, the National Military Command, Air Force Headquarters, the Air Force District of Washington, and other organizations in the National Capital Region. By 2012, the IT environment there had become unstable due to a hodgepodge of aging IT infrastructure components that were difficult to integrate and maintain. The 844th Communications Group opted to implement a Shared Computing Environment -- a standardized, modular environment that can meet the ever-changing mission needs of the Defense Department's customer base. The system was designed from the bottom up with a focus on interoperability. The project has replaced over 400 aging servers, consolidated 32 server racks down to eight, and reduced storage needs by 40 percent.
