2016 Winner Profile

Westchester County Department of Information Technology (DoIT)

Project Description:
The Westchester County Department of Information Technology developed the TeleCorrections Inmate Kiosk and Video Visitation System, which allows an inmate from the Westchester County Jail to securely communicate face-to-face with an outside party, such as a family member or probation officer, without having to leave his or her secure housing area. While the new system increases inmate access to information regarding his or her incarceration such as commissary balance, their next court date, bail amount and scheduled visits it also provides visitors an easier, stress-free alternative to on-site visits. In addition to the social benefits, the Department of Corrections estimates that the technology has saved probation officers more than $80,000 in reduced travel and staff time.
