2016 Winner Profile

University of Chicago Medicine

Project Description:
At the University of Chicago Medicine, there was minimal visibility into what was causing delays in operating rooms (ORs). To improve OR procedure, the hospital developed the OR Turnover Dashboard. This tool uses the data from handoffs between phases of the patient and room preparation process leading up to the start of the OR procedure to calculate the timeframes for the events, alerts teams to specific delays and displays the status of the OR turnover activities in real time via pagers, mobile devices and on the dashboards. As a result, each turnover time was reduced by four minutes, enabling an income opportunity of $969,000 in annual revenue through increased capacity and cost avoidance. In addition, fewer delays to the patients improved the overall patient experience.
