2016 Winner Profile

Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands

Project Description:
Planned Parenthood launched an initiative in August of 2014, called Planned Parenthood Care. The goal of the project had two main objectives: First, to provide access to birth control and STD testing in areas underserved because of geographic challenges, which may be preventing patients from visiting health centers. These areas include remote locations in Alaska, Hawaii and Idaho, areas where there are few, if any, healthcare services. And second, to provide patients with a more discreet way of seeking and receiving treatment for STDs. The new Planned Parenthood Care program, using the federation's first mobile health app, mHealth, allowed them to virtually extend their medical expertise which allows patients either through a smartphone or computer, to have a real-time visit with a Planned Parenthood provider online and face-to-face through a secure video consultation system. Those patients can then receive birth control or an STD test kit and treatment, if necessary, in the mail, quickly, easily, and confidentially.
