Project Description:
Beginning in January of 2013, NorthShore University HealthSystem, consisting today of hospitals located in and around the Chicago area, and in collaboration with experts from NorthShore Health Information Technology and the Center for Biomedical Research, they development a new application called What's Going Around? (WGA) as a means to processes Electronic Medical Record data on thousands of patients around the world daily to help characterize a local epidemiology of syndromes of interest. Tracking trends on viruses such as influenza-like illness, strep throat, pertussis, gastroenteritis and pediatric asthma, WGA compiles data on every patient seen by a NorthShore primary care physician every day, including their symptoms, diagnoses, test results and the latitude and longitude of their home address. The WGA algorithms analyze the data and generate graphs and maps demonstrating the epidemiology of these conditions.
