2016 Winner Profile

Project Description:
When NatureServe's audience sent signals that they were abandoning its shared system for biodiversity data management, the company new it needed a better solution. After overhauling the system's platform, business model and workflows, it launched Biotics 5. Biotics 5 is a data management system that houses both tabular and spatial information on more than 70,000 species and ecosystems. Deployment involved developing the application software, implementing a private cloud virtualized server infrastructure and migrating more than 50 individual program databases from the legacy client-server architecture to the new system. As a result, the subscriber fees NatureServe charges fulfill annual revenue targets necessary to host, support and improve the system. In addition, Biotics 5 now generates a positive ROI to its business clients compared to the legacy system it replaced.
