DirectBuy's mobile app allows members to snap a picture of an item found anywhere in stores, the vendor's catalog, on a website or at someone's house, for example and matches it with a similar product, allowing the user to add it to their cart and buy it immediately. The app uses machine learning to categorize the object, search-and-sort technology that recognizes the object's color, shape and texture, and big data and NoSQL to improve the scalability and performance of the image search tool. In the app's first four months, sales increased $1.6 million, and the number of product help-desk calls overall dropped 35 percent.
