2016 Winner Profile

City of Long Beach Technology & Innovation Department

Project Description:
In December of 2013, the City of Long Beach, California authorized the execution of an agreement to provide upgrades and continued operation of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine's (PRM) facility reservation and registration system. Using these funds the U.S.'s 37th largest city set out on a mission to provide Opportunity through Connectivity. This new mission included such initiatives as increasing business efficiency, improving health and safety while helping residents to communicate more efficiently with city officials. One such effort included the major city departments working together to implement a new cloud-based Registration & Payment system, replacing their former staff intensive system based on cash-only transactions. The effective results of this initiative could be seen immediately with such side effects as day-camp registration times taking over 10 hours in some cases previously, to only 3 minutes to complete, a reduction in 54 staff hours, and a net revenue increase of $105,000 in just the past 18-months using the new cloud based solution.
