2016 Winner Profile

Christiana Care Health System

Project Description:
Christina Care Health System launched an automated tool that prevents unintentional acetaminophen overdoses in patients. Its former process required that nurses identify and manually account for the 24-hour history of all acetaminophen sources in all possible forms, including oral, intravenous, topical, rectal, intramuscular, nasal and otic. The tracking and alert system automatically identifies and calculates the running total of all acetaminophen-administered medications and doses, both scheduled and as-needed, for the prior 24 hours. When a medicine that contains acetaminophen is scanned at the bedside and exceeds the 24-hour limit, for example, an alert on the handheld scanner notifies the nurse. In the two months after the system's launch, 187 overdoses were detected and prevented by signaling the real-time alert.
