2017 Winner Profile

Arlington Public Schools

Project Description:
One of the main goals of the Arlington Public Schools (APS) in Arlington, Va., is to reduce the number of students who drop out of school before they achieve their high school diplomas. In addition, APS aims to increase the number of students graduating with advanced diplomas so they can have better careers. To reach its goals, APS sponsored a big data competition whereby teams would analyze the anonymized longitudinal data, including student demographic and achievement information, and submit key findings. The team that developed the best analysis would receive a cash prize. APS then took the intelligence from the analysis and incorporated into a data warehouse built to provide early warning systems and predictive analysis to tailor services to students the help them graduate and be successful. In 2015, 92.8 percent of APS students graduated, up from 84.5 percent in 2009, and in 2015, 68.5 percent received advanced degrees, up from 63.9 percent in 2012. Each statistic is an index of growth in the district that reflects the success of the data-focused exercises.
