2017 Winner Profile

BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina

Project Description:
A couple years ago, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) was faced with a challenge — how to exponentially increase the amount of information it stored and analyzed while keeping its costs level or even lowering the costs associated with this capability. Although much of its data was unstructured (e.g., doctors' notes, Twitter feeds, customer service call notes and emails), the company's existing technology was centered on structured data. Additionally, the technology and processes BCBSNC was using couldn't evolve to meet this need so the company had to find something completely new and disruptive. Ultimately, BCBSNC implemented a Hadoop platform that saved money and significantly accelerated the company's ability to analyze all kinds of data. The impact on the business from the Hadoop implementation include reduced storage and compute costs, which dropped to $10,000 a terabyte from $100,000 per terabyte; data gets in the hands of analysts in a week or two, not months; and the company can now analyze exponentially larger volumes of data.
