2017 Winner Profile

Project Description:
Monsanto Company leverages biotechnology, plant breeding and chemistry in conjunction with data science to develop better agricultural products and optimize field production, sustainably as well as to run its internal business operations more efficiently. This requires enhancing the company's global supply chain's analytics capabilities and accelerating the speed and depth of analytics and modeling. To better understand and simplify the analysis of the interaction between the genetics and environmental factors at the subfield level, Monsanto developed a scalable environmental classification methodology and engine. By collaborating on geospatial innovations through analytics, science research and engineering, Monsanto can now classify more than 90 billion data points in a matter of days. The output of this work has enabled improved planting decisions and supply planning, which strengthens the company's ability to deliver a great customer experience. Monsanto's efforts led to prescriptive, variable seeding rate recommendations for 2016 North America production across 10 percent of its fields, with an expected increase to 50 percent in 2017.
