2017 Winner Profile

NorthShore University HealthSystem

Project Description:
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how a person's genetic makeup influences that individual's response to different medications. Its focus is on providing safe and effective medications (right drug + right dose = first time). Implementing a laboratory bench-to-bedside approach, NorthShore University HealthSystem developed a method to enable clinicians to leverage a patient's genetic makeup in real-time to effectively prescribe medication. The process leverages home-grown solutions and the ActX genomic decision support platform to integrate pharmacogenomics data into routine patient care within EMR (electronic medical record) workflows. NorthShore's Pharmacogenomics module provides drug-gene information that can customize medical treatment, which minimizes side effects and adverse reactions to drugs. This project has resulted in real-time integration with ActX, making easy-to-understand pharmacogenomics data available at the point of care so clinicians can make more informed medication choices. This leads to safer and more effective drug therapy across a patient's lifetime.
