2017 Winner Profile

Project Description:
In 2009, the Danish parliament voted to fund the Banedanmark Signaling Program for modernizing railway signaling on Denmark's mainline network and Copenhagen's commuter lines (SBane). A Parsons joint venture was awarded a 12-year consultancy contract to replace and integrate all signaling equipment, upgrade trackside cellular communications infrastructure and consolidate the numerous traffic control centers across Denmark. All conventional network signaling equipment is being replaced with modern in-cab digital radios whereby rail traffic signal interlocking is implemented by computers rather than older technologies such as relays and mechanics. The system is currently being tested and built, with total completion expected by 2024. The integrated signaling system is designed to improve punctuality through the elimination of errors from outdated equipment and through the replacement with standardized digital radio communications. Expectations are for an 80 percent decline in signal-related delays on main and regional lines and a 50 percent decline on the Copenhagen SBane as a result of the modernized signaling program.
